SALCOS Green Steel — Low CO₂ Steel Production

The SALCOS® (Salzgitter Low CO₂ Steelmaking) program represents the Salzgitter Group's decarbonization roadmap for minimal-emission steel production.

SALCOS Green Steel - Salzgitter Group

What is SALCOS®?

SALCOS® is Salzgitter Group's green steel production strategy based on hydrogen (H₂) electrolysis generated with renewable energy to replace coke in the iron ore reduction process. The goal is to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional steel production.

The process involves three phases of plant transformation between 2022 and 2033. In each phase, coke blast furnaces are gradually replaced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) fed with direct reduced iron (DRI) produced with hydrogen.

SALCOS® and BRINAR®: same group, same commitment

BRINAR® is manufactured by Ilsenburger Grobblech GmbH, a subsidiary of Salzgitter Group. This means BRINAR® directly benefits from the decarbonization path outlined by SALCOS®.

As Salzgitter's supply chain moves toward green steel, BRINAR® plates will be certifiable with a lower carbon footprint, allowing customers to meet their own sustainability goals and regulatory requirements.
